Science Expo

This year, the grade 5 Science Expo was on energy. I did a lemon battery for my experiment. My first experiment was a human powered battery, but my mom and I couldn't find all the apparatus, so my mom found me a new one. I decided to work on my own because I found that easier. I did a lot of group tasks so I thought I should try going on my own for science expos. When I went to look of the things I would need for the experiment, I found it hard to get copper wire. I found it very fun when I made poster. On the Science Expo day. I didn't feel too nervous. When I presented my experiment to the judge it went well. I enjoyed watching the other experiment in the class. When I started presenting my experiment to the parent and the students in the school, I felt a lot more confident than I had felt the first time.

Winning the Race

She was ready for the race. Today she was going to win. She had to win. She was waiting at the start. Waiting for the moment to start running. BANG! She was off. Running faster than She had ever ran before. I have to win she kept telling myself. She was in the lead. She was definitely going to win. She could see the finish line. People were cheering and clapping. She was nearling there. She was going to win! She won! Yes. People were cheering, the commentators roaring. She felt excited. She felt proud. Her dream came true. Yes!

Being a Human

Today was another usual day. I could hear the chirps of birds in trees. I was sitting on my branch watching the sun rise. The sun shone on the row of houses in which the humans lived. I looked at the houses and wondered what humans were like. I decided to fly around and see. I passed a house with a rather chubby human sitting on the couch eating chips and sweet snacks. I watched him longer. He did nothing but lie around and eat. If that was all humans did, then it was better being a bird like me.

A day in the life and home of a child in an informal settlement

When I woke up this morning it was very cold in the house. The walls of the shack were wet and damp. I got up and took a towel to clean the the walls dry. We were fortunate that the metals walls of the house didn't collapse during the storm last night. My back felt sore. Very sore. It was probably because of my bed. It was hard and not comfortable at all. There was no sheet or pillow. There was just a bed with a small, thin blanket. All the beds looked the same. While I was getting dressed, I noticed that my sister's bed was empty. Dad had gone to the doctor with her this morning. She had a bad cold. Mom was up already. I said good morning. She made me some bread with butter for breakfast that morning. Before I left, I took one more look at the small shack and set off for school.     It was still raining when I was walking. I felt grateful that I had shoes on my feet when I walked past the kids that morning. Even though my shack wasn't the best shelter, I still am thankin...

High Africa Camp

Last week Wednesday on the 9th of March to the 11th the grade 5's went to High Africa for camp. The minute the bus started driving I got very excited. On camp we did a whole lot of games and activities. My favorite activity was the leap of faith. I had a harness on and I had to jump from a high pole. It was scary and fun. I am sure I overcame my fear of heights. Another part of camp that I really liked was when we swam in the river. The cabin I was in was very nice. The only thing I didn't like was the bugs in the bathroom. I had to use the next door's bathroom. The most challenging activity was when I had to race on a raft with my group against another. First we had to build the raft which was not too hard. Racing the other group in the river was the difficult part. My group lost because the raft fell apart in the river. Another challenging part of camp was when I had to make a chicken potjie with my friends. The onions burnt while we were making it, but it was still delic...

ILT Soil Creature project

Last week ILT started. My partner for the ILT was Charlie. We had to chose an animal that lived underground. We came up with a meerkat. On the first day we went up to the IT room and made tallies for a maths activity. I drew a pictograph using the information from he tally and I wrote down three questions. Charlie did the table and a bar graph. After the tallies Charlie and I prepared our information about the meerkat. We wrote down our paragraphs for the poster. The next day Charlie and I started making our poster. We wrote our paragrphs in neat and cut out the pictures. I drew a big meerkat for our poster. I had lots of fun and exciting times with Charlie when we made had made it. My favourite fact about the meerkat was  that they could see their enemies in the sky from more than 300 m away. Our next activity the following day was to make an oral about our creature. Charlie and I pretended to be reporters and it was really exciting. Working with Charlie for the ILT was really wonde...
